In the course of Information Technology (IT) application modernization; architectural revision (e.g. Service-Oriented Architecture [SOA] implementation); integration of external systems, diverse technologies, Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products, etc. it has become necessary to create enhanced methods to integrate external systems/applications with legacy systems, as well as to integrate decentralized legacy systems with other systems of the same type.To continue meeting the needs of multiple Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) systems.

Management has directed an Office of Information Technology (OI&T)/Product Development- commissioned enhancement project to develop additional services and methods to the VistA Integration Adapter (VIA) middleware. The VIA Enhancement program will further develop VIA, a Java Enterprise Edition (JEE) platform middleware solution in accordance with the Business Requirements Document (BRD) provided for this project.

The VistA Integration Adapter Enhancements (VIA) project will add services and methods currently in MDWS version above 2.5 to VIA. These additional services and methods are listed in the VIA Requirements Specification Document.

The VIA will provide additional services to the already existing deployed web-service platform. These services are designed to be extensible, scalable, maintainable, and to meet the performance needs of the enterprise.
